Don’t Label Me: LGBTQIA+ Ally

Our Center Faculty Library in Laurel, Maryland has been a loud and proud Safe and sound Room and Ally for ALL of our  LGBTQIA and Neurodivergent college students for several years. We have obtained each and every effectively reviewed, asked for, intriguing, and middle faculty approved fiction and non-fiction guide on these subject areas. I daresay we have just one of the biggest collections all around! We have Secure Area signals all-around, a rainbow narwhal (pictured higher than) and groupings of guides on exhibit all the time.

BUT… I have potent viewpoints about placing a Genre label on these publications. I am seriously cognizant that some of my Middle Schoolers are curious or questioning to discover far more about but are not all set to out them selves. To their friends and to their mother and father. This is nevertheless another cause I am from Genrefication. I know, amongst some of my other Long run Prepared Librarians this is a controversial matter.  But to team all these publications in just one place means that little ones could be Pretty HESITANT to gravitate and search that spot of the Library. 

I recall back again in the 80’s in university, a mate of mine questioned me to make a pilgrimage to the legendary Lambda Soaring bookstore in Baltimore since they did not want to go in there on your own. We even drove all around the block to “scenario the be part of!” before parking and heading within. So I can just visualize how a teen who has concerns about their gender id in Middle Faculty might not be all set to hang out with all those “labeled” guides in my University Library. 

I Do not Like Labels

Some publications also span among a lot of genres. What if you have a guide that has a queer principal character but there’s also other features to the tale? Like a mystery? Or suspense? How many genre stickers are you going to set on there? Wherever are you likely to shelve it? 

I am going to shelve it by author and style label it Thriller. Due to the fact also, what does it issue if the principal character who is fixing a mystery is gay both – besides to clearly show kiddos that people today of ANY orientation or gender identification can do do Anything at all, correct? Not narrowed down to a label.

As a substitute, I’m likely to just use the Teen label. Very a lot covers everything. Besides that Mystery reserve.

Do not Censor My Assortment

Which is taking place a large amount additional recently? That’s a subject for an additional put up — but why the heck are we going backwards with Flexibility to go through? [SMH]

You should be aware: This publish is about Middle Grades only. Not elementary and not Superior Faculty. YMMV.

What do do instead? 

Produce: shows, guide lists, bookmarks, Instagram posts, posters, and many others. 

Present that you are an Ally – Be a Safe and sound Space!  BE Out and Happy that you are there for ALL your community and that you will supply all the data and resources that they need.
