According to the letter, the signatories’ “firm belief in the Rhodes Honor Code we all signed impels us to make this ask for.”
The letter argues that Barrett has violated the Rhodes Honor Code as a result of her testimony in the Senate affirmation hearings and in her “judicial conclusion-producing method.”
“In each individual of the types earlier mentioned, Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s adherence to an originalist interpretive methodology of constitutional textual assessment (as mirrored in her scholarly authorized article content) seems to be at odds with statements she produced to the United States Senate,” the letter states.
In the course of Barrett’s Senate confirmation hearings, she reported in reaction to a issue posed by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., that Roe v. Wade is not super-precedent.
“To determine instances that are so well-settled that no political actors and no folks very seriously force for their overruling. And I am answering a ton of inquiries about Roe, which I assume implies that Roe would not slide in that classification,” Barrett said.
The letter criticized Barrett’s response, stating that she might have been misleading.
“It was, at most effective, disingenuous of Justice Barrett to acknowledge that she did not think Roe to be a ‘super-precedent’ nonetheless then propose that did not mean the circumstance ‘should’ be overruled, inspite of clearly adhering to a lawful philosophy that would of course lead her to rule against Roe,” the letter states.
The alumni team also wrote that Barrett is a significant danger to fundamental legal rights in America.
“And we believe that that Justice Amy Coney Barrett is a person of the most significant present-day threats to our essential legal rights, the steadiness of our nation, and our democracy. What’s more, as Rhodes alumni who pledged the very same fealty to truth, loyalty, and service’ as she did, we discover her actions to be a obvious – and potentially history’s most harmful to day – violation of the Honor Code we all maintain dear.”
“Only becoming a person of our most well-known alumni is not a ample explanation for the Higher education to continue on honoring another person as a result who has very publicly breached the most basic Rhodes values. Thus, we respectfully request that Justice Barrett be taken off from the Rhodes School Corridor of Fame primarily based on the above violations of the Rhodes Honor Program,” the letter added.
